Commodities
Gold per ounce, oil per barrel, copper per pound. With commodities the unit is part of the price — without it the number says nothing.
The unit first, then the price
3,418 for gold and 4.61 for copper look comparable side by side, and they are not: one is a price per troy ounce, the other per pound. That is why the unit always sits next to the price on this page.

Where the values come from
Commodity prices are formed on futures exchanges — COMEX, NYMEX, ICE and the London Metal Exchange. Their price data is licensed.
For the time being we obtain the values automatically from an external data service and refresh them roughly every ten minutes. What is shown is the front-month futures contract, not the spot price — each value states which one.
